Career transition becomes more and more popular nowadays, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement.

Career transition is the process of when a person decides to change their job and begin another one. It can be that either the new job is within the same job family (e.g. a business consultant becomes a business coach). Or, it can be that the new job is from an entirely different industry, e.g. a lawyer becomes an IT startup founder.

Why do you want to have a career transition?

Before you make a job transition, it is necessary to ensure that you really want to do it. This decision-making is a very delicate matter.

The most popular reason of why people decide to have a job transition is the desire of a better lifestyle. Let’s present some of the most important reasons for such a decision:

  • The long working hours,
  • stressful working environments,
  • the daily commuting,
  • disproportionately low wages for all the effort, academic level and commitment,
  • the need to spend more quality time with family and friends

are just some of them.

How to make the decision of job transitioning?

Having a new career doesn’t occur in a blink of an eye. It needs careful design and planning. Here follow the necessary steps for a safe and successful implementation of such a great venture.

Step 1. Assess your current life and job

In order to make this life-changing decision, you first need to contemplate about your current life and professional status. Do you feel satisfied and complete from it? Make an assessment of your life. Does your current job fulfill your sense of purpose? How about your current lifestyle? Does your job help you evolve as a person? And does it offer you the proper amount of funds necessary for the lifestyle you desire?

When your answers to the aforementioned questions affirm you that you need to change your job, you need to proceed to the next step.

Step 2. Envision the new lifestyle you desire

This step may seem as a reverse engineering to some people. Nonetheless, in order to find the new job that suits you, you need to define first the lifestyle you want to have. What is the purpose you wish to fulfil with this job? How is it going to help you add to the community and provide the best lifestyle for yourself? How many hours do you want to work and how much money do you want to earn. Where do you want to work from, e.g. a company, a startup, your home? How many hours a day do you want to work? Do you want to work alone or with other people? What type of job seems appealing to you? Describe with as much precision possible how you envision your lifestyle to be with your new job.

Step. 3 Spot your new job based on your skills and experience

Now that you’ve done that, the next step in the process is to spot your new job. Make a list of all the acquired skills and soft skills you have as well as the occupations you have already had! If you have a difficulty in identifying your skills, you can seek the assistance of an expert success coach. Using this list, start determining the new jobs that you would be interested in doing and you would like doing. Write down those that seem to support the new lifestyle you envision. Find the one that seems to be the best fit for you based on the next criteria: a) it helps you meet your purpose to yourself and your community; b) it ensures you the funds you desire to support your lifestyle; c) it allows you to work on the industry that you love and feel enthusiasm about. This makes sure that you will be productive and happy at the same time.

Step 4. Begin your career transition

Once you have decided, which is the new job you want to do, it’s time to set it to action. First, make sure whether there may be some extra training or certifications you need to do before starting your new job. E.g. if you want to work as a real-estate agent, you need to pass specific exams to get your professional license.

Once all your qualifications are in order, start setting your plan to transit from your current job to the new one. Career transition is a very delicate matter. Upon it depends the success of you new lifestyle’s planning. That’s why I will dedicate a whole other article on that pretty soon.
